Course Description

The BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Engineering is a one-year, full-time vocational qualification designed for post-16 learners who are passionate about pursuing a career in the engineering sector. Equivalent to 1.5 A Levels, this course provides a strong foundation in core engineering principles and practices, combining theoretical knowledge with practical, work-related skills.

This qualification is ideal for learners who wish to progress to:
• A second year of study leading to the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering
• An apprenticeship in engineering
• Employment in the engineering sector
• Higher education in engineering or related disciplines

Mandatory Units (Core Curriculum):

Learners will complete four mandatory units, which are assessed either internally or externally:

  1. Engineering Principles (externally assessed)
  2. Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
  3. Engineering Product Design and Manufacture (externally assessed)
  4. Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering

    Optional Units (Examples):
    Learners will also complete three optional units, which may vary. Common examples include:
    • Computer Aided Design in Engineering (2D & 3D CAD)
    • Electronic Devices and Circuits
    • Electronic Printed Circuit Board Design AND Manufacture

    Upon successful completion, learners can progress to:
    • Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering (Year 2 of the programme)

Other Important Information

Assessment:

Assessment is unit-based and includes a mix of:

• Externally assessed tasks and exams set by Pearson

• Internally assessed assignments based on realistic vocational scenarios

Grades awarded per unit range from Pass, Merit, to Distinction, contributing to an overall qualification grade.

Future Prospects

Upon successful completion, learners can progress to:

• Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering (Year 2 of the programme)

• Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/HND) in Engineering

• Undergraduate degree programmes in engineering disciplines

Apprenticeships or employment in roles such as:

• Engineering Technician

• Civil Engineer
