Zac Micallef, who is studying for a Bricklaying apprenticeship, works for Calben Construction, Cuxton, Rochester.

Congratulating Zac, his onsite mentor Darren Micallef, of Calben Construction, said: “I’m proud of Zac for winning this award and am glad that his tutor has recognised how much effort he has put in to get to the standard he is currently at.

He really is a hard-working young man, and I believe that he will go far in this industry. Calben Construction Invests in their apprentices, not just with funding but with giving them experience and time to learn their chosen trade, which is probably part of why Zac’s brickwork is already at a great standard even at this early stage of his career.”

MidKent College Bricklaying tutor/assessor, Craig Street, said: “I nominated Zac for this award because of his fantastic work ethic, attitude and behaviour towards doing his best at whatever task set at college. He is always on time, if not early, to my class and takes on board any feedback, advice or constructive criticism I have given him. Zac never hesitates to ask questions on how to improve his ability and add any tips for his building work. This, alongside working for Calben Contruction, is one of the reasons he has gone from struggling on the trowel to being one of the best in his class, building to a very high standard.”

Zac said: “I was happy just to be nominated by my MidKent College tutor for this award but to find out I have actually won is even better. I have really worked hard on progressing in Bricklaying both at college and when I’m working on site. I think the combination of both my employer and College Tutor works really well with my development because even though this is still only my first year as an apprentice, Calben have me laying bricks and blocks every day, building up my skill and confidence on the trowel. At college my tutor helps me improve with helpful tips on building up speed and building up my knowledge by making theory lessons interesting and easy to follow.”

Congratulations Zac.
