Last week the family and friends of MidKent College student Safiya Stewart visited College to launch an award that recognises the hard work of young people in the community, in her honour.
Mrs Stewart, Safiya's mother, is chairman of the Medway African Caribbean Association and spoke of how her daughter spent much time working to promote diversity in and amongst Kent towns as part of the association. Safiya also founded Young People United, which works with young people as part of MACA.
Consequently, the YPU Inspiration Young Person Award has been created, and the winner will have been nominated by others aged under 25. It will celebrate their inspirational influence on the lives of another young person, similarly to how Safiya inspired those she met.
Secondly, a Battle of the Chefs competition is being launched at MidKent College for Hospitality and Catering students, which will take place in November. Safiya had a flare for cooking and shone not only in her community work, but in the kitchen too.
