Our Motor Vehicle students enjoyed an unforgettable behind-the-scenes experience at Brands Hatch recently, thanks to Speedworks Motorsport, HQSE and the British Army Sports Teams.
Hosted by Amy and Chris from Speedworks Motorsport, the day began with an inspiring talk from Danny, giving students a real insight into the world of professional motorsport and the career opportunities within the industry.
Students then headed trackside for an exclusive pit session, where they met BTCC Corolla driver Josh Cook and racing driver and television presenter Jade Edwards, who shared their experiences, career journeys and life in the fast lane.
The group also explored the MINI paddock, where they met MINI CHALLENGE UK driver Harry Hickton, a regular front-runner at Brands Hatch, who spoke about his experiences in the sport, including walking away unhurt from a dramatic high-speed roll-over crash during the season finale at the circuit last October.
Bernard Crosland, Level 2 Motor Vehicle student commented,
"Talking to Harry Hickton about his experiences competing in the Mini Coopers was a real highlight. It was inspiring to hear from someone so young and relatable to us, and it gave us a better understanding of the different pathways into motorsport."
After watcheing the action unfold around the circuit, the students got hands-on with the British Army motorsport teams, taking a closer look at the race car and go-kart they compete in. They even had the chance to see Speedworks BTCC driver Max Buxton Holder put his reaction skills to the test on the Army's BATAX wall. They also heard more about potential career pathways for mechanics in the Army.
From engineering insights and cutting-edge technology to the excitement of race day, it was a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect their classroom learning with real-world industry experiences.
Motor Vehicle tutor and trip organiser Jeremy Davies said,
"Experiences like this bring our students' learning to life. It was fantastic to see them so engaged throughout the day. From speaking with industry professionals to getting up close with the cars and teams, the visit gave them a real insight into where their skills and ambitions could take them. We’ve built a fantastic relationship with both the British Army and Speedworks Motorsport, and long may that continue. We’re hopeful to be invited back again next year, and we’re also excited by the Army’s offer to come into college to deliver training sessions and team-building days for our students.”
A huge thank you to everyone involved for sharing their passion and expertise and creating such an action-packed and inspiring day for our future automotive professionals.
