New Graphic Design course to launch

Creative-minded students are being urged to sign up for a new Graphic Design course at MidKent College worth the equivalent of three A-levels.

The level 3 Diploma in Graphic Design will launch in September following the success of the level 2 programme, which has been running since January and covers a wide range of techniques and processes including digital art, printmaking, typography and more.

Lecturer Tracey Heyburn said the course was ideal for students planning to progress to university or straight into employment.

“Anyone who enrolls on this programme stands a great chance of getting a job at the end of it,” she added.

“Graphic design is a growing industry so there’s a lot of work out there at the moment. It’s definitely a good time to get into the profession.”

Graphic Design students are given the opportunity to work on a number of real-life projects. On the level 2 course they designed a prospectus for Barming Primary School and a poster advertising an upcoming art show, among other products.

Tony Medhurst, 23, from Rochester, had been out of work for several months before enrolling at the College but has now secured employment with a local design agency.

He said: “I did a bit of web design before but when that work dried up I didn’t have enough experience to move onto anything else.

“Back then I was thrown in at the deep end without really knowing the basics, but here at the College I’ve been able to start from the beginning and learn all the steps to create a much better overall design.

“It’s really been a massive help in me getting a job. I’m really pleased with how everything has turned out.”

MidKent College offers a number of Art & Design courses at both its Medway and Maidstone campuses.
