MidKent College welcomed a distinguished gathering of civil engineering professionals recently as it hosted the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South East Presidential Visit, featuring ICE President David Porter, industry leaders, employers, technicians, and learners from across the region.

As a key stop on the President’s South East tour, the event placed MidKent College at the heart of conversations shaping the future of civil engineering. The visit highlighted innovation within the sector and celebrated the essential contribution of technicians to the profession’s success.

Charlotte Brown, T Level Construction Lecturer explained:

“The event was open to ICE network employers, industry professionals, and our students, showcasing learners from T Levels through to degree level. We were also pleased to involve photography and catering students, as well as our careers team. Overall, the aim was to highlight and celebrate the industry from within, demonstrating the full pathway from education to professional careers.”

The visit provided learners with a valuable opportunity to engage directly in discussions with employers, technicians, and senior industry leaders from across the South East, gaining insight into current industry thinking and future career pathways.

Richard Abiodun, Curriculum Manager for T Level Construction, highlighted the impact of such experiences:

“This event will support our T Level students by enabling them to network with employers and industry professionals, giving them invaulable information about career pathways and the wide range of opportunities available within civil engineering.”

The value of these connections was echoed by Malcolm Peake, Professional Development Manager at Tony Gee, who praised the collaboration between education and industry:

“I think it's a really exciting event. We've got students from MidKent College here. We've got senior figures from the industry talking to each other, and we've got people who've built their careers in Civil Engineering. It’s fantastic to see academia and industry come together.”

A huge thank you to the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) President David Porter, our guest speakers, employer partners and everyone who contributed to the day. We were delighted to welcome professionals from across the South East and to showcase the talent, ambition and opportunities within our Construction and Civil Engineering programmes at MidKent College as well as our fantastic technical facilities.
