This season’s MidKent College (MKC) theatre performance of Under The Spotlight at the Gillingham campus once again benefitted from the skills of a former MKC student who’s now on the production team.

Alumni Chris Symonds says: “I saw myself as more practical than academic and realised that a traditional university route wasn’t the right path for me.” He decided to study Performing Arts at MidKent College’s Medway campus from 2018 to 2021 and now juggles two jobs on the staff.

In 2021 he started working at MidKent College as a part-time member of the Events Support Team. He later took on an additional role as a Music and Performing Arts Technician.

Chris had always been passionate about performing, growing up dancing, singing and taking part in performances. However, during his first year at college, everything shifted, and he discovered a new aspect of theatre.

“After taking part in a sound and lighting session with Jack, (Gschaider) who was then completing a Train to Teach programme (and is now a Performing Arts lecturer), I discovered a new interest behind the scenes. That experience had a lasting impact and inspired me to explore technical theatre.”

He acknowledges that the industry can be challenging to break into, but his journey shows the value of persistence, adaptability and taking opportunities when they arise.

Chris always wanted to work on cruise ships, and in November 2024, he achieved that goal when he was hired as a General Technician for Disney Cruise Line. Over five months, he worked across two cruises, supporting shows, theatre productions, children’s activities and events.

During this time, he drew on key skills developed at college, including working with young people, building relationships and being adaptable in fast-paced environments.

After returning, Chris continued working with MidKent College on a zero-hours contract while also taking the leap to start his own business. In July 2025, he launched 3 Tech Productions, a sound and lighting company, and has since taken on two fellow alumni. The business has already supported live events internationally, including a trip to Ireland to provide lighting for a band.

Chris reflects positively on his time at College, particularly the strong relationships he built with staff. He credits Jack Gschaider, Emma Moore and Ben Gurney for their support and mentorship, which helped shape his career direction.
