Starting college is a big step, and getting ready for September can be exciting. You might already be thinking about your new stationery, laptop or what your first day will be like.
But preparing for college is about more than just what you pack – it’s also about getting yourself ready for a new routine, new experiences and new opportunities.
Here are a few simple things you can do over the summer to help you feel confident on your first day.
Get into a routine
After weeks of lie-ins and late nights, getting back into a routine can be a bit of a shock!
A week or so before college starts, try going to bed a little earlier and setting an alarm in the morning. It can make those first few days much easier.
Plan your journey
If you're travelling to college by bus, train or bike, it's worth practising the journey before term starts.
Knowing where you're going, how long it takes and where to go when you arrive can help you feel much more relaxed on your first day.
Set yourself a few goals
College is a chance to learn new skills, meet new people and take your next step towards your future.
Think about what you'd like to achieve this year. It could be making new friends, improving your confidence, aiming for great grades or trying something you've never done before.
Get organised
Getting a few practical things sorted before September can help make your first few weeks at college much less stressful.
If you've been offered a place on a course at MidKent College, you should have received an enrolment email with all the information you need. Make sure you check this carefully, as it will include a link to your enrolment date and instructions on what you need to do next.
When you receive your GCSE results on 20 August, remember to upload them by following the instructions in your enrolment email. Completing this step helps us confirm your place and make sure you're ready to start your course in September.
Whatever your GCSE results, it's important that you still upload them and attend your scheduled enrolment session. If your grades aren't quite what you expected, don't worry, our team will be there to talk through your options and help you find the best route for you.
If you can’t make your scheduled enrolment date, due to a holiday or other planned appointment, please let our Admissions Team know as soon as possible so that they can make other arrangements. You should let them know using this enquiry form:
It’s also worth checking whether you're eligible for the MidKent College Bursary, which could help with travel, meals or essential course-related costs. If you think you might qualify, apply as early as possible and make sure you've provided any supporting evidence needed.
If your course requires a uniform, it's best to wait until you've completed your enrolment before buying anything. Although it can be tempting to get everything ready straight away, waiting until your place is confirmed helps avoid unnecessary costs if your course changes. Some suppliers may not be able to offer refunds, particularly for personalised or embroidered items.
A little preparation now can help you feel more confident for enrolment and welcome week at College, but don't forget to enjoy the rest of your summer!
Take time to relax, catch up with friends, enjoy your hobbies and recharge after a busy year. Starting college is a big milestone, and arriving well-rested is just as important as arriving prepared.
