Choosing what to do after GCSEs is a big decision, and visiting Colleges and school sixth forms is a great way to get a feel for what's out there. But what actually happens at a MidKent College open day? Here's what you can expect when you us this November.
Explore the campus
Ever wondered what MidKent College looks like? An open day is your chance to look around, explore the facilities and see where you could be studying.
From specialist workshops and science labs to creative spaces and practical training areas, you'll get a better idea of what learning at your local College looks like.
Tip: look out for our friendly support staff (they're the ones in the purple t shirts!). They can direct you if you're lost and help answer any questions.
Meet the tutors
Got questions about a course? This is your chance to speak to the people who teach it. Find out what you'll study, what lessons are like, what qualifications you'll need and where your course could take you. You can also ask about practical projects, work experience and opportunities to develop your skills.
Tip: Don't be shy about asking questions! Our tutors are there to help you understand what the course is really like. Even if you think it's a silly question, chances are someone else is wondering the same thing.
Discover your options
A Levels aren't the only route after GCSEs. At MidKent College, you can explore different options, including vocational courses, T Levels and apprenticeships.
Whether you already have a career in mind or are still figuring things out, an open day is a great opportunity to compare routes and discover subjects you might not have considered.
Tip: Keep an open mind. You might arrive interested in one particular course and leave having discovered something completely different. Make sure you attend our Next Steps and Apprenticeship talks to help you understand what's on offer.
Find out about support (and fun!)
Starting somewhere new can feel like a big step, so it's worth finding out what support is available.
From careers advice and financial support to wellbeing services and student enrichment activities, there are lots of ways to make the most of your time at MidKent College. Whether you want to try something new, meet people with similar interests or find help when you need it, there's plenty to discover. If you get extra help with your learning at school, speak to our ALS Team about how we can support you at College.
Tip: our Additional Learning Support and Enhance Curriculum tutors will be on hand to help ease any worries you have about the move from school to College. Whether you're nervous about making new friends or need to know what practical support you can expect at College, they'll be happy to help.
Bring your questions (and your family/carers!)
You can visit with a parent, carer, friend or another family member. Having someone with you can be helpful, especially if you're comparing courses or want a second opinion.
Not sure what to ask? Here are a few ideas:
What will I actually do on this course?
What are the entry requirements?
What happens if I'm not sure which course to choose?
What could I do after finishing my qualification?
What support is available if I need it?
Tip: there's a lot to see, so give yourself enough time to have a good look around and take everything in. Need a little break while you're exploring? Grab a coffee or a drink from one of our campus coffee shops and take a moment to plan where you'd like to visit next!
Get help with your application
Found a course that feels right for you? You can take the next step at our open day by visiting our Application Zone, where our friendly Admissions Team will be on hand to help you submit your application.
Whether you need a little guidance with the online form or have questions about the application process, we'll help you get started.
Tip: You can apply online whenever and wherever suits you, but if you're ready to apply, our Application Zone is a great place to get it done there and then. Our courses are popular so it's best to apply as early as you can!
What if I still don't know what to do?
You might leave an open day with a few courses in mind rather than one clear favourite, and that's absolutely fine. The important thing is that you've had a chance to explore what's available and find out more about your options.
If you're still unsure, think about which subjects you enjoy, what you're good at and how you prefer to learn (academic or practical?) You could also speak to a Careers Adviser for impartial advice to help you work out which route might suit you best.
Tip: You don't have to figure it all out on the day. Make a note of the courses that caught your interest and speak to a Careers Adviser if you'd like some help deciding what to do next.
Ready to see it for yourself?
If you register, you'll receive a QR code which we'll scan on your arrival to getyou checked in quickly. You'll be given an event map and a course guide so that you can start exploring straight away. Remember to ask staff if you're unsure about anything at all. We can't wait to meet you and help you make your next step!
