Meet Georgie Devaney, a passionate Nurse Educator who joined the Diploma in Education course at MidKent College to challenge herself and step into the world of Further Education. Read more about her journey

from what inspired her to take the leap, to the confidence, friendships and opportunities she’s gained along the way.

What made you decide to train as a teacher in Further Education?

I am a Nurse Educator in my everyday life so it is important that I teach properly in order to ensure that nurses and care providers have the best education for better patient care and experiences, I felt this course would be ideal for this. I also wanted to see what working in an FE college would be like and having my placement here is amazing.

Has the course changed your career plans?
I would very much now like to have a career teaching the T level in Health and will continue as a nurse educator as well. Working with the T Level has opened my mind to new experiences and opportunities which I am grateful for.

What has been the most valuable or enjoyable part of the course so far?
Being part of the exam process and seeing what I have taught the learners bear fruit. It is an absolute privilege to teach them and to be rewarded by seeing this.

I have also made friends, given advice, but above all been made to feel part of a team even though I only teach once a week, and come to College once a week.

What has surprised you most about training to become a teacher?

How much better I actually teach and having that recognition from others who say how well I did it. I am also so much more confident in stretching my learners now too.

How does the course fit around your work and personal life?

It’s great, it’s an evening course once a week. Yes there is a lot of coursework and writing schemes of work and everything a teacher needs to do ,but that’s reality. Kyla, our tutor, is great! She told us from the start we needed to be invested as this is a 2 year course.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for the course?

Be prepared for commitment! If you can’t commit then either wait until you can or don’t do it yet as you have to commit to coursework and placements and everything else as a teacher. That said, this has been the most rewarding and challenging experience since my Registered Nursing degree but it has has been so rewarding. I will miss my time teaching at MKC. If you invest time in this then the rewards are endless and fulfilling.
