Open days aren’t just for prospective students, they’re for families too. As a parent or carer, you play a big role in helping your young person make the right choice, so it’s important you feel informed and confident. Here’s our Q&A guide to what parents should know (and look out for) before attending a MidKent College Open Day.
Can parents/carers come to open days?
Yes! While the day is designed for students, parents and carers are very welcome. You’ll be able to look around, join talks, and ask questions. If they feel comfortable, try to let your young person take the lead.
What kinds of questions should parents ask?
Parents often think of practical details that students might not. Good topics include:
• Travel and transport links
• Financial support and bursaries
• Student support services (wellbeing, careers, learning support)
• How are students assessed (throughout the year by assignments or end of year exams)?
Who will we meet on the day?
You’ll get to meet our tutors, support staff and current students. The College Principal, Simon Cook, along with our Executive Team will be on hand too. This is your chance to meet who your young person will be learning from and who they can turn to if they ever need extra support.
How can I help my child prepare?
Encourage them to make a shortlist of questions they’d like to ask. This way, they’ll feel more confident speaking up on the day. We've created a handy questions checklist to help them - click here to download.
What should we be looking out for?
Alongside course information and facilities, pay attention to the atmosphere:
• Does your child feel comfortable here?
• Do students seem engaged in conversations, relaxed, and positive about their experience?
• Can they imagine themselves studying here every day?
What if we leave with more questions?
Don’t worry, our Course Enquiries and Admissions Teams are always happy to help afterwards. You can get in touch anytime to follow up.
Choosing a college or sixth form is a big decision, and your support makes a huge difference. By attending an open day together, you’ll both leave with the information, reassurance, and confidence you need to take the next step.
