Kent: the county that loves apprenticeships - Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships have become a popular option for those leaving full-time education, offering a great option to earn and learn. This week is National Apprenticeship Week, which has got us thinking about some of the top industries in Kent for people to consider if they think an apprenticeship is right for them.

The number of people starting apprenticeships in Kent has risen by 2,290 people in the last four years, thanks to interest in the oppurtunities they offer, which helps to make up the 2.4 million new starts nationally.

You can typically find a placement in any sector – the government is keen for people to do this option so the possibilities just keep growing! But we’ve compiled a list of some of the most common in our county.

1. Accountancy

Qualified accountants can have a tough time finding their way into the industry and often spend many years in junior roles, without gaining the skills required to progress further with their career - something our area is able to tackle with a range of accountancy study programmes on offer.

2. Catering

The more you cook, the nicer your food, so we’re always pro Hospitality and Catering apprenticeships if it means there is more great food around! Plus you can have the chance to specialise soon on in whatever area of catering you’d like to – whether it be great pub grub or Japanese sushi.

3. Retail

Retail is known for being a fast-paced environment where things are always changing. Apprenticeships in retail give the opportunity to work in small independent stores or even larger chains. From advertising and product promotion, to design and sales, there is a wide range of opportunities for businesses in retail to embrace.

4. IT

Without a doubt, IT has been one of the fastest growing industries over the last decade or so, with technology continually changing. Young people in particular seem to be better clued up on the whole IT industry, mostly thanks to all the time spent online! They offer an opportunity for businesses to take on their knowledge and enthusiasm. From web design to digital marketing and social media, apprentices can work in a number of departments and bring valuable skills to your company.

5. Vehicle Maintenance

Anyone with a love for cars can undertake a vehicle maintenance apprenticeship, and a garage that takes you on can really open up the door to the commercial side of mechanics for you too. Plus you’ll be a great asset to their practical work!
