If you’re trying to get a better grade in your GCSE English or Maths, it’s easy to think that the best thing to do is just revise EVERYTHING! But in reality, a lot of students are losing marks they could easily pick up with some small changes.

If you’re close to a pass, this is where your focus should be.

 1. Answer the Question Properly

It sounds obvious, but this is one of the biggest issues. Students often:

  • Write around the question
  • Misread key words
  • Go off topic

👉 How to fix it.

  • Underline key words in the question
  • Ask yourself: “What is this actually asking me to do?”
  • Keep checking that your answer links back

 2. Show Your Working (Maths)

Even if your final answer is wrong, you can still pick up marks.

  • Write out each step clearly
  • Don’t skip straight to the answer
  • Use methods your teacher has shown you

💡 Examiners often give method marks. Don’t miss them!

 3. Use Evidence (English)

A common reason for lost marks in English is not backing up points. Instead of:

  • Making a point and moving on

Do this:

  • Make a point
  • Add a short quote
  • Explain what it shows

👉 Even a short quote can earn marks.

 4. Don’t leave questions blank

  • If you’re unsure, write something.
  • In Maths: try a method, estimate, or write a formula
  • In English: write a basic point or interpretation

💡 A guess with some logic = possible marks. A blank answer = zero.

 5. Check your work (quick wins)

If you have time at the end, use the time wisely

  • Re-read answers
  • Check calculations
  • Make sure you answered every part

👉 This alone can boost your grade.

 6. Learn Command Words

Many marks are lost by misunderstanding what the questions is asking you to do. Common ones:

Describe → say what you see

Explain → say why/how

Compare → give similarities and differences

Understanding command words correctly can instantly boost your marks.

7. Use the mark scheme mindset

Exams aren’t about writing the most, they’re about hitting marking points.

  • Keep answers clear and relevant
  • Don’t overcomplicate it
  • Think: “What would the examiner give a mark for?”

8. Avoid Silly Mistakes

These cost more marks than you think! You might be:

  • Misreading numbers
  • Dropping minus signs
  • Rushing calculations
  • Forgetting units

👉 Slow down slightly, and check your answer.

These small changes can be the difference between a grade 3 and a grade 4.
