Applying for your first apprenticeship can feel confusing, especially if you’ve never applied for a job before. The good news is that employers don’t expect you to know everything.

They’re looking for potential, attitude and willingness to learn. This step-by-step guide breaks the process down so you know exactly what to expect!

Step 1: Understand what an apprenticeship is.
An apprenticeship is a paid job where you:
• Work for an employer
• Learn new skills on the job
• Study towards a recognised qualification
• Get support from a training provider
You don’t need lots of experience to start, apprenticeships are designed for beginners.

Step 2: Decide what type of apprenticeship you want to do.
Before applying, think about:
• What subjects or activities you enjoy
• Whether you prefer practical, academic or mixed learning
• The kind of job you’d like to do day to day
Apprenticeships are available in areas such as:
• Business and administration
• IT and digital
• Engineering and construction
• Health and social care
• Creative and marketing roles
You don’t need a final career plan, just a general direction. At MidKent College we offer the following apprenticeships

Step 3: Search for Apprenticeship vacancies.
You can find apprenticeships through:
• Apprenticeship vacancy websites
• Employer websites
• Training providers
• Careers advisers or school/college support teams
Tip: Apprenticeships are competitive, so apply for more than one.

Step 4: Create a simple CV
Your CV should be clear and honest. At this stage, employers expect:
• Your contact details
• Education and subjects studied
• Skills (e.g. teamwork, communication, organisation)
• Any experience (part-time jobs, volunteering, school projects, clubs or hobbies)

You don’t need:
❌ Fancy language
❌ Lots of work experience
❌ A long CV
One page is enough!

Step 5: Complete the application form.

Try to cover:
• Why you want this apprenticeship
• Why you’re interested in the role or industry
• What skills or qualities you can bring
Be yourself and keep it simple.

Employers value:
• Enthusiasm
• Reliability
• Willingness to learn
• A positive attitude

Step 6: Prepare for an interview or assessment.
Not all apprenticeships require interviews, but many do.
You may be asked:
• Why do you want this apprenticeship?
• What do you know about the company?
• What are your strengths?
• How do you manage your time?
Preparation tips:
• Read about the employer
• Practise answers out loud
• Dress smart but comfortable
• Don’t panic if you don’t know everything
They are not testing perfection, they’re looking for potential.

Step 7: What happens if you’re offered an apprenticeship
• A job offer
• A start date
• Information about your training provider – find out how to apply for a MidKent College apprenticeship course here.
• Details about pay, hours and support
You’ll usually have a contract, just like any other employee.

Step 8: Don’t give up if you’re not successful!
Rejection is normal, especially for popular apprenticeships.
If you’re not successful:
• Apply for others
• Ask for feedback if possible
• Improve your CV and interview skills
• Keep going
Many successful apprentices applied more than once.
Final tips for beginners:
• Apply early as roles can fill quickly
• Ask for help (teachers, College tutors, careers advisers, family)
• Be organised and keep track of applications
• Believe in your potential!
