Course Description

Civil Engineering Senior Technicians coordinate, manage and provide the technical planning, design, building, management, maintenance or dismantling of the built environment (such as buildings, structures, parks and public spaces, schools, offices, museums, hospitals) and infrastructure including but not limited to:

  • transportation (road, rail, bridges, tunnels, ports and airports),
  • water and waste management,
  • marine and coastal engineering (irrigation systems, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), flood, river and coastal defences),
  • water and power supplies (utilities, hydropower, power stations, nuclear plants, on and offshore wind farms).

    The candidate will complete an online portfolio of evidence which demonstrates that each of the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours in the Standard, have been met in readiness for the end point assessment. This online portfolio of evidence will be supervised by in-company mentors and LCB assessors.

    Completion of the apprenticeship standard will be confirmed following the satisfactory conclusion of an End Point Assessment.

    Apprentices will study a range of units including:

  • Construction Practice & Management
  • Principles of Structural Design
  • Construction Technology
  • Surveying, Measuring & Setting Out
  • A portfolio of evidence will also be progressed and developed throughout the practical period of the Standard.

Future Prospects

Upon completing the Level 4 Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering Senior Technician, individuals will have gained a strong foundation of technical knowledge and practical skills, opening the door to a range of career opportunities. Graduates may pursue roles such as engineering technicians, site supervisors, or project managers.

The apprenticeship also provides a clear pathway for further study and professional development, including progression to a Level 6 qualification or working toward Chartered Engineer status. It offers a comprehensive starting point for those aiming to build a successful and engaging career in the civil engineering industry.

Entry Requirements

To apply for the Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician Apprenticeship, candidates must be 18 years old or over.

Secure employment: Have an employer in place who is committed to supporting them throughout the apprenticeship.

Work hours: Be employed full-time, working a minimum of 30 hours per week, and be on the company’s PAYE scheme.

Educational qualifications: Must hold a minimum of 3 A-Levels, or a full Level 3 qualification (or equivalent). If candidates do not hold maths and English at grade 4/C or above, they will be required to complete Functional Skills qualifications alongside their apprenticeship.

Pre-employment checks: Successfully complete a scope of work review to ensure your job role aligns with the apprenticeship requirements, a skills scan, and initial assessments in maths and English.
