Start your journey towards a career in catering and hospitality with our Level 1 Certificate Introduction to Culinary Skills.

This practical course is ideal if you’re new to professional cookery and want to build your confidence, develop essential cooking skills and find out what it’s like to work in a professional kitchen.


You’ll learn the basics of food preparation and cooking, using a range of ingredients, equipment and cooking methods. You’ll develop essential kitchen skills, including safe and hygienic working practices, preparing ingredients, following recipes and presenting food.
The course gives you plenty of opportunities to learn by doing, helping you develop your practical skills and confidence in the kitchen.

You’ll also learn about the importance of teamwork, organisation and working safely in a professional catering environment.

Future Prospects

The Level 1 Certificate Introduction to Culinary Skills can help you progress to further study in professional cookery, catering or hospitality. You may be able to progress to a Level 2 Culinary Skills or Professional Cookery course, depending on your experience and entry requirements.


It can also help prepare you for an entry-level role in the catering and hospitality industry, such as a kitchen assistant.

Entry Requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grades 1–2, including English and maths.
