From creative uncertainty to a career in architecture...
"I began my journey into architecture at MidKent College in 2019, at a time when I was unsure about my future career. Although I had always been creative, I struggled to see a long-term path in graphic design. That changed at an open day, where tutor Charlotte described construction as an artistic discipline as well as a technical one. Her passion helped me see how creativity and practical problem solving could come together, and I enrolled that very day.
Starting the course was initially daunting as I was the eldest student in the class and one of only two women, but my enthusiasm for the subject quickly took over. The immersive curriculum covered surveying, design and model making, allowing me to develop creative ideas while grounding them in real-world application. Even during the shift to online learning due to COVID-19, the support from tutors Charlotte and Dave remained outstanding, helping me stay motivated through both academic and personal challenges.
One of the most rewarding experiences was applying my learning to a real project by building a bespoke log cabin with a local architect. Being able to link theory to hands-on construction, while receiving guidance from my tutors, confirmed that I had found the right career path.
After completing my course with top grades, I continued my studies in Scotland and am now nearing the end of my Master’s in Architecture at Robert Gordon University. I’ve since worked on real-life projects including freelance design work and council led renovations. Looking ahead, I hope to specialise in ecological and conservation architecture, with the long-term aim of running my own practice."
