From student to mentor: How Elise turned her passion into purpose
When Elise first joined MidKent College in 2007 to study Hairdressing at the City Way campus, she never imagined she'd one day be running her own Hair Academy, training future professionals and helping vulnerable women rebuild their confidence through education.
After leaving school, Elise knew hairdressing was the career she wanted, but she found the theory side of the course challenging, and left before the course had finished.
"I've always been practical. It was the written work that I struggled with." Although the College identified that she could benefit from additional learning support, Elise was reluctant to accept help.
"I didn't want to stand out. Looking back now, I wish I'd spoken up."
A few years later, after gaining industry experience and becoming a mum, Elise returned to MidKent College to complete her Level 2 Hairdressing qualification at the Gillingham campus.
"Coming back to College was completely different. I loved learning alongside people of different ages and life experiences."
After qualifying, Elise built her career around family life, working as a mobile hairdresser, followed by Beautique lounge, before joining La Dolce Vita salon, where she has now been for almost ten years.
Wanting to help others develop their skills, Elise launched her own Hair Academy, Ministry of Manes, delivering accredited hair extension and hairstyling courses. What started through word of mouth has grown into a successful training business.
Today, Elise is using her experience to make an even bigger difference. Working with Medway Council and local organisations, she delivers trauma-informed training programmes for survivors of domestic abuse as well as women with experience of the criminal justice system.
"The qualification is important, but sometimes the biggest achievement is simply turning up each day."
Her courses combine practical hairdressing skills with confidence building, goal setting and ongoing mentoring, helping learners gain new skills while rebuilding their confidence and independence.
As a proud MidKent College alumni, Elise is keen to give back by inspiring current students and sharing her experiences. Her story is a reminder that success isn't always a straight path, and that with determination and the right support, it's possible to build a career that helps change lives.
