Sir Michael Wilshaw – head of the education watchdog Ofsted – spoke with staff and students during a two-hour tour of the £86 million development.

During the visit he took part in a filmed interview with Media Production students and was shown around some of the College’s state-of-the-art facilities including its kitchens, beauty salons and engineering workshops.

Sir Michael said: “My first impression is that the general environment here is really good. The College has high standards of accommodation and great facilities, and it’s clear from the teachers and students I’ve spoken to that they seem happy and are having a good experience.

“The College is currently rated as ‘good’ (by Ofsted) and that’s come about through good teaching and progression rates, ensuring students get a job and go on to that next stage of education. It’s all down to leadership and the quality of teaching and learning.

“I think the College is heading in the right direction but what’s important is that it doesn’t take its eye off the ball and continues to focus on the quality of provision.”

Sir Michael was joined on his tour of the campus by Ofsted’s director of learning and skills, Matthew Coffey, and was shown around by principal Stephen Grix, deputy principal Sue McLeod and other members of the management team.

Mr Grix said he invited Sir Michael to Medway to gain valuable feedback on some of the College’s key initiatives, including the JobShop and its work to help students prepare for employment.

“We were delighted to welcome Sir Michael to MidKent College and are pleased he enjoyed his visit,” added Mr Grix.

“We constantly strive to improve the quality of education we provide to our thousands of students so it was extremely worthwhile to speak with Sir Michael and to listen to his comments and suggestions.”
