I’m currently a trainee quantity surveyor with MHS Homes and studying the HNC Surveying Apprenticeship. I started there working in customer care and wanted something a bit more challenging so I move into the quantity surveying team. I have a mentor there who looks after me. I run my own sites including all of the tendering, budgeting and estimation. There’s a lot of maths involved, which is great as that was a favourite subject of mine at school. I also communicate with the site staff to make sure progress is happening with the project.
My next step is the HND at the College and long term I want to be a qualified quantity surveyor. I’d recommend others to be apprentices as you gain experience too, which you wouldn’t from the university unless you do an industry year. I’d recommend the College too.
So far we’ve studied a Construction unit, Science and Materials and CAD drawings.
