The Details

The HNC in Mechanical Engineering is a unique course designed to meet the demands of the 21st century and address the shortfall of trained engineers.

Graduates will be in a position to make a valuable contribution to the industry upon successful completion of the programme, having developed the analytical, research and design skills essential in today's marketplace.

You will study a total of eight modules - four mandatory and four optional, depending on your individual needs and interests.

  • Analytical Methods for Engineers
  • Engineering Science
  • Advanced CAD Techniques
  • Applications of Pneumatics and Hydraulics
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Mechanical Principles
  • Materials Engineering
  • Engineering Project.

    Other Important Info

  • Typical lessons will involve research-based activities, individual and group projects, practical applications and seminar presentations
  • Assessment is through a combination of research and design tasks, practical investigations and analytical assignments, as well as observations and presentations
  • There will be end exams on some modules
  • This programme is validated by the University of Greenwich.

    Future Prospects

    Successful completion could lead to employment or promotion within the engineering sector as an engineering technician, project/design engineer, or in systems commissioning/ applications. You may also progress to a foundation degree or full degree course.

    Entry Requirements

    You will need one of the following:

  • A BTEC Level 3 Diploma/ National Certificate in Engineering
  • A BTEC Extended Diploma/National Diploma in Engineering
  • Two A-levels (including maths).

    Mature candidates who do not meet the above criteria may still be admitted to the course subject to an interview with the programme director. The interview includes an admissions test for English and maths.
