The Details

The Higher National Diploma is designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and national occupational standards where appropriate, with a strong work-related emphasis.

Students will gain both a practical and theoretical understanding of the scientific, mathematical and design principles that will help them progress to professional and management roles in the industry. The following modules will be studied throughout the course:

  • Typical lessons will involve research-based activities, individual and group projects, practical exercises and presentations
  • You will be taught in small groups rather than as part of a large lecture audience
  • Students will usually wish to purchase textbooks although there are extensive library and online resources available
  • Ceremony costs apply for those wishing to attend the graduation
  • This programme is validated by the University of Kent

    Future Prospects

    Successful completion could lead to employment as a technician or in a middle management/ professional role within the civil engineering, structural design, highway maintenance, local authority or utility industries.

    Some choose to continue onto the BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering top-up degree.

    Entry Requirements

    You will need one of the following:

  • 80 UCAS points (under the new tariff) from A-levels (including a minimum C grade in maths)
  • BTEC National Certificate (minimum MMM grade)
  • Extended Diploma (minimum MMM grade)
  • GNVQ (Advanced) in a relevant discipline
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma
