The Higher National Diploma is designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and national occupational standards where appropriate, with a strong work-related emphasis. Analytical methods
Students will gain both a practical and theoretical understanding of the scientific, mathematical and design principles that will help them progress to professional and management roles in the industry. The following modules will be studied throughout the course:
Civil engineering construction (A)
Geology and soils
Communication and research
Safety in construction
Science and materials
Structural analysis and design
Civil engineering management
Computer aided design (CAD)
Fluids and hydraulics
Site surveying procedures
Tendering and estimating
Refurbishment, Maintenance and adaptation
Other Important Info Typical lessons will involve research-based activities, individual and group projects, practical exercises and presentations
You will be taught in small groups rather than as part of a large lecture audience
Students will usually wish to purchase textbooks although there are extensive library and online resources available
Ceremony costs apply for those wishing to attend the graduation
This programme is validated by the University of Kent
When applying for UCAS you will need the following codes for your application: UCAS code H200 and MidKent College's Institution code M87
Successful completion could lead to employment as a technician or in a middle management/ professional role within the civil engineering, structural design, highway maintenance, local authority or utility industries.
Some choose to continue onto the BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering top-up degree.
You will need one of the following: 80 UCAS points (under the new tariff) from A-levels (including a minimum C grade in maths)
BTEC National Certificate (minimum MMM grade)
Extended Diploma (minimum MMM grade)
GNVQ (Advanced) in a relevant discipline
Access to Higher Education Diploma
Admissions test for Maths and English.
