Community spirit captured by day of fun

Wednesday, 01 Sep 2010
Families living near to MidKent College's Medway Campus joined local police community support officers and college staff for a fun-filled community event.

The busy fete, held last month at the college’s main site on Medway Road in Gillingham, featured a range of activities, including a climbing wall, arts and crafts, nail painting and face painting. Wacky children’s entertainer, Mrs Back to Front, was on hand to add to the fun.

The free day-long event, funded by L&Q Housing, was open to all residents living in the local area and was organised in partnership with MidKent College and Kent Police. College PCSO Rowan Cornwall said: “This kind of event is ideal for getting people from the local community to engage with each other, the college and the local police. It’s all about having some fun and keeping the children and their parents enjoying themselves at the end of what can feel like a very long summer break.”

L&Q neighbourhood investment coordinator Venessa Denny said: “We’re keen to fund events like this for anyone living in or near to L&Q communities and housing estates - particularly in this part of Gillingham, where parents can start to feel isolated by the end of the six-week break.”

Brave seven year old Finton Goodayle said he particularly enjoyed going on the climbing wall. “It was easy,” he said. He added: “I liked it at the top.”

L&Q Housing manages a number of properties in Gillingham, including Kelly Drive, Augusta Close, Johnson Avenue and Cobham Rise.
