Children enjoy Harry Potter themed science day

Tuesday, 20 Jul 2010
Primary school children learned about potions, charms and defence against the dark arts on a recent trip to MidKent College’s Medway Campus.

Students from the college’s applied science department had organised a Harry Potter-themed science day for pupils from Bredhurst Primary School in Gillingham. More than 30 seven-to-nine-year olds spent an afternoon in the college’s laboratories learning about fingerprint and footprint analysis, electromagnetism and chemical reactions.

The day’s activities aimed to capture the imaginations of the visiting youngsters, explained applied science lecturer at the college, Eleanor Wood. “We want to let the children know what amazing experiments are out there to be seen, and to show them that science is something everyone can enjoy,” she said.

20 year old MidKent College student Tiffany Palmer said: “The children have really enjoyed themselves and have been very inquisitive, asking us lots of questions about each activity they’ve done.

“We’ve had a great time too. We’ve made signs welcoming the children to Hogwarts and played the Harry Potter theme music all day.”

The College’s students also had fun creating a range of experiments for their visitors to enjoy, she said. “The children have loved all of the activities we have arranged for them, particularly any that have allowed them to get a bit messy,” she added.

Eight year old Bredhurst pupil Katy Plumb had a great time during the visit. “We’ve made coloured troll gloop and a potion that exploded like a volcano,” she said.
