A scientist from the Bafta-winning Inside Nature’s Giants team dissected some of his favourite experiences during a visit to MidKent College.

Evolutionary biologist Simon Watt dropped into the Medway Campus on Tuesday (17 April), when he spoke to Animal Management students about coming face-to-face with some of the world’s most fascinating creatures.

During his time on the hit Channel 4 show – which won the Bafta for Best Specialist Factual programme in 2010 – Simon has had the opportunity to examine fin whales, Burmese Pythons, Great White Sharks and countless others.

But during his visit to the College he warned the students against planning for a career in television.

He said: “Being on television isn’t a job for me; it’s just something I do as well as being a scientist. It’s the same for all famous scientists. Even Brian Cox is a professor first and foremost.”

Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Simon runs his own company – Ready, Steady, Science! – which creates and performs shows to audiences ranging from toddlers to academics.

“I think it’s vitally important to engage as many people in science as possible,” he said. “I try to gear people’s minds towards jobs in the industry because these are the people who we will rely on in the future to solve some of the world’s greatest challenges.”
