Kick-off for new Gills partnership

Students from the Medway Campus’ Sport department will shadow the League Two club’s Football in the Community team as they deliver a number of training schemes across the towns.

The youngsters will also have the opportunity to observe academy, reserve and first-team training sessions throughout the season.

Sport lecturer William Lee said the partnership was part of a new course pathway aimed at helping students gain employment in the football industry through refereeing and FA coaching qualifications.

He added: “I’m very excited about this opportunity and believe it will give students a first-hand insight into how the football industry operates.

“We have previously operated courses based around the playing aspect but have decided to deliver this partnership from a new angle.”

Students on the scheme attended a special launch event at the home of Gillingham FC – Priestfield Stadium – on Thursday (13 September).

Also in attendance were Gills midfielder Jack Payne and club mascot Tommy Trewblu.

Adam Lawrence – head of Football in the Community at Gillingham FC – said: “The GFC Community Trust is delighted to announce this partnership with MidKent College, which will see young students volunteering for the scheme and gaining important experience in football coaching.

“Not only will this be a benefit for the community team by having extra coaches at our sessions, but I am sure the students will benefit from working in a variety of environments alongside some experienced coaches and teachers.

“It is important for us as a charitable trust to forge links with local organisations and build strong relationships in our community, and this exciting partnership with our neighbouring college is further evidence of this.”
