Supporters have donated thousands of pounds since last year’s visit to the Melon Education Centre, where students built a security fence, taught English to the children and delivered sacks of clothing.
More of the same can be expected when carpentry lecturer Dan Hodges leads another team out to Nakuru on Sunday, 3 June, for a two-week trip.
And in addition to 10 huge holdalls containing all manner of clothes, sports equipment and toys for the children, their teachers will also receive eight laptop computers donated by the College.
“I can’t wait to see their faces when we arrive,” said Dan. “All the teachers wanted last time were some new blackboard rubbers, so to be able to give them these computers is fantastic.
“We’ve held a number of fundraising events this year and the students have each raised £1,500 each to pay for the trip, so we’re extremely grateful to everyone who has donated money.
“The children out there have nothing and are so happy with everything they are given. It really is a worthwhile cause.”
The trip to the Melon Education Centre is now set to become an annual event for MidKent College students and staff. Anyone who would like to donate money, unwanted mobile telephones or clothing – particularly football equipment and strips – to the appeal should email dan.hodges@midkent.ac.uk.
