Darren Moseley, Addam Card and Helen Cousins came third in the Student Chef Team Challenge

Competitors Darren Moseley, 20, from Strood, Addam Card, 19, from Gillingham, and Helen Cousins, 29, from Rochester, came third in the South East heat of the Brakes-sponsored event, which was held at the College’s Medway campus last Monday (16 January).

Young chefs from across the region took part in the competition, which required the competitors to cook a three-course meal in just 1hr 45mins.

A team of judges was impressed by the quality and originality of the MidKent College menu, which included a starter of scallop carpacchio, a main course of pan-roasted pheasant, and a Kentish tart for dessert.

Catering lecturer Johannes Keevey said: “It’s a really big deal for the College to be able to host as prestigious an event as this, and everyone has been really positive about the facilities we have to offer.

“The kitchen is a very pressurised environment, especially for chefs so young, so this will stand them in good stead for the future.”

Teams from Thanet College and Sussex Coast College clinched first and second place in the South East heat respectively.

Brakes’ marketing executive Andrew Crawford said: “When we visited MidKent College and viewed the fantastic catering facilities available, it was a no-brainer for us to hold the competition here.

“I can’t see any reason why we won’t come back in the future. It’s been an excellent event and has given these talented students a whole new level of experience.”

MidKent College offers a number of courses in Hospitality & Catering from Entry Level (equivalent to two GCSEs at grades E-G) up to Level 3 (equivalent to three A-levels).

The College also has two fine dining restaurants – The Pavilion at the Medway Campus and The Apprentice at the Maidstone Campus – run by students under the watchful eye of experienced staff.
