Community librarian Sophie Butcher visited MidKent College’s Medway Campus earlier this month where she captivated around a dozen local youngsters with tales of bears, forests, jelly and pants.
The free literacy workshop, funded by L&Q Housing, aimed to bring reading to life, explained Strood Library employee, Ms Butcher. “It’s all about getting the children up on their feet and actively involved in the story telling. It helps to capture their imaginations,” she said. She added: “It’s so effective they don’t even realise they’re improving their literacy.”
The free community workshop, which was open to everyone aged eight or below and living in L&Q Housing in the Gillingham area, was organised in partnership with MidKent College and Kent Police.
Eight year old Tilly Willway of Kelly Drive said she had enjoyed the day. “Pants and More Pants was my favourite book,” she said. “It was really funny,” she added.
The children and their parents also enjoyed a teddy bears’ picnic and craft activities as part of the captivating workshop
