Fourth straight win for aspiring soldiers

Tasks at the event – held at Sir John Moore Barracks in Shorncliffe, near Folkestone – included an indoor and outdoor assault course, an interactive laser shootout and a timed buggy race.

MidKent College lifted the trophy for the fourth year running after finishing the main course in just 8 min 23 sec – a full 1 min 20 sec faster than runners-up Canterbury College.

Programme area leader Katriona Topps said this was testimony to the value of the weekly two-hour fitness sessions undertaken as part of the students’ course.

She added: “The Army Skills Challenge is an excellent event offering students an insight into Army life and keeping those who have already applied for the service motivated until they are ready to join.

“It allows for competition between colleges and schools, and showcases the advantages of taking a Public Services course in advance of a related career.

“We believe the calibre of students from MidKent College is high and that events such as the Army Skills Challenge help to equip them with the abilities to meet the needs of future employers.”
