College triumphs at KEiBA awards

The announcement was made at a gala dinner hosted by former Dragons’ Den star Rachel Elnaugh and held at Priestfield Stadium, Gillingham.

MidKent College beat other shortlisted finalists TW Services and Mainstream Group to the title of ‘Large Business of the Year’ – sponsored by Belmont International – after a rigorous judging process that rated entrants against pre-set criteria.

Acting principal Sue McLeod dedicated the award to principal Stephen Grix, who is currently on sick leave.

She added: “A big thank-you must also be paid to our staff for the support they give to students of all ages and backgrounds.

“We all have a passion for what we do, and in particular for creating the entrepreneurs, managers and employees of the future who will make Kent and Medway an even greater place to live and work.”

KEiBA aims to recognise and reward excellence in Kent and Medway businesses of all sizes, as well as individuals.

It is rare for a public sector organisation like MidKent College to win such an award, but the judges were particularly impressed by the fact that a third of the College’s £53 million annual turnover is self-generated.

This is partly thanks to a 30-year contract with the Ministry of Defence to deliver the construction and engineering training at the Royal School of Military Engineering.

Ms McLeod said: “One of our biggest priorities is to support local employers in Kent and Medway by providing training for their staff, offering top quality apprenticeships and giving young people the job skills business leaders are looking for.

“We also recently launched a new suite of Higher Education courses to ensure we are catering for all levels of expertise.”
