Cash raised from a fun day at the Medway Campus last November – including a raffle to win a signed Gillingham FC shirt – has now been donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The charity’s regional appeals executive for the South East, Louise Scott, was presented with a cheque for £1,012 when she visited students on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Business course.

She explained that the money would go towards the cost of the new £3 million teenage cancer unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, Surrey, which also serves patients in Kent.

Louise said: “If you’re a cancer patient who is under 16 then you’re normally treated in a children’s ward with Winnie the Pooh pictures everywhere, and if you’re over 16 then you’re with mostly old people aged 60-80.

“Neither of these situations are at all suitable for teenagers, which is why we set up the Royal Marsden appeal in the first place.

“The money raised by MidKent College students will make a massive difference to the lives of young cancer patients across the county.”
