The Discretionary Bursary

What is the Discretionary Bursary and how can it help me?
The Discretionary Bursary is a fund made available by the Government (administered by the College) to help students on a low income manage the costs of studying.

The Discretionary Bursary may be able to help with travel, essential kit, uniform, trips and books for your course.

If your household income is below £16,190 (£20,187 if applying for travel support) you can apply for help in the form of a Discretionary Bursary.

Travel
You may be eligible for help with transport if you live more than 2 miles from the campus, fulfil the criteria and are using public transport.

The 16-18 Guaranteed Bursary


What is the Guaranteed Bursary and how can it help me?
The Guaranteed Bursary is a fund made available by the Government (administered by the College) to help students within the groups listed below to manage the costs of studying.

The Guaranteed Bursary may be able to help with travel, food, essential kit, uniform, trips and books for your course.

Students from the following groups may be eligible for a Guaranteed Bursary of £1,200:

  • Young people in care  
  • Care leavers (those who are engaged with the Local Authority ‘Leaving Care’ team)
  • Young people in receipt of income support
  • Disabled young people in receipt of Employment Support Allowance (ESA) who are also in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

This award is an alternative to and not an addition to any transitional payments for students who were in receipt of Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) from 2009 to 2011. Students who are successful in applying for a Guaranteed Bursary and who are in receipt of transitional EMA will no longer be entitled to transitional EMA payments.
